APPLE VALLEY — WinCo Foods this week will break ground on a 92,000-square-foot store in Apple Valley, which will be the discount grocery chain’s first location in the Victor Valley. Located at Jess Ranch Marketplace at Bear Valley and Apple Valley roads, the new grocery store is expected to open in January 2008, according to Erik Westedt, an associate and retail specialist with the Ontario office of CB Richard Ellis. The developer of Jess Ranch regards WinCo as a key component to the retail project, which will feature 700,000 square feet of space upon completion at the end of next year.
“We include a supermarket in our retail developments whenever possible because it brings people to the center more often, and many of those who visit the grocery store do cross-shopping at the other retail locations,” said Malcolm Riley, president of Malcolm Riley and Associates, the developer of Jess Ranch. Headquartered in Boise, Idaho, WinCo is also considering opening another store in Victorville. “We are looking to expand in areas with residential growth and population density to support our stores,” said Michael Read, vice president of WinCo Foods.
WinCo Foods is an employee-owned supermarket chain offering discount prices, operating in five western states, including California, where the chain currently has 22 locations and plans to open several others. “Our primary customers are the legendary soccer moms and families on a budget,” Read said.
